The much exhausted excuse and apology that the hardcore believers put forth
whenever a criticism is cited of their faith, clergy, practices etc runs as
follows: [This is applicable to both, Muslims and Hindus, but here I concern
myself with Muslims]
a. media exaggerates, is unreliable [they readily trust this same media for positive stories, though. In any case they have no media of their own, anyway]
b. the mufti/clergyman is NOT representative of Muslims. Instead so and so is. [Incidentally these so-and-so are disowned by others of their faith, and in other contexts. So such pick and choose goes on.
Let the faithful NAME a dozen TRUST-worthy scholars / muftis by consensus on this forum.
c. a bunch of lunatics did this, not we. [that other see similar bunches existing in our midst, is ignored]
Very few of them have the courage to own up what wrong their brethren are doing and condemn it. Such apologies are usually far fetched and fallacious, convincing no one in reality, except the writer himself.
And this requires the courage to question our belief system and the way it is handed down over the ages. Until then some of us will continue to find scapegoats.
