RUN
FOR UNITY
ACT
FOR DISUNITY
Whatever Modi does, has to have a deep political purpose. He asks the
nation to run for unity invoking Sardar Patel, not necessarily someone who was
hailed by Hindus and Muslims with same aplomb.
Simultaneously he slights Indira Gandhi, decidedly someone who was hailed
by both Hindus and Muslims alike across communal lines, at different times and
in different measures. She was disliked equally by the two communities.
If Sardar was hailed for uniting India territorially, Indira earned
praise for liberating East Pakistan [Bangladesh] and raising India's stock
internationally. She was the Prime
Minister of India that Patel never was. And she died, in a sense, for the
territorial integrity of India.
Sardar deserves our respects for many things, and must be respected. For this
there are 364 days more to choose from to honour him, rather than doing so at
the expense of Indira.
Modi divides India between Sardar and Indira! And he does this
unabashedly to browbeat his political adversaries.
